덴마크의 아티스트이자 작곡가인 라그닐 메이(Ragnhild May)는 사운드, 조각, 설치, 퍼포먼스와 실험적 악기를 오가며 작업합니다.

Rethinking the Body of the Instrument

Danish artist and composer Ragnhild May works across sound, sculpture, installation, performance, experimental instruments, graphic scores, and text.

In her practice, sound is not simply something to be heard. It becomes material, structure, and a way of thinking about the body, technology, and society.

One of the most distinctive aspects of May’s work is the way she questions the idea of the musical instrument itself.

Who are instruments designed for?
What kind of body do they assume?
What kinds of movement and behaviour do we consider “normal” when we play them?

By altering existing instruments or creating new sculptural and performative objects, May explores the hidden assumptions built into musical tools. Her work often touches on the body, gender, social conventions, and cultural history.

In her projects, the boundaries between instrument and sculpture, human and machine, artwork and tool are constantly shifting. An object may first appear to be a sculpture, then reveal itself as an instrument. A device made for producing sound may begin to feel like a body or a performer in its own right.

Her practice also draws from fields such as music theory, feminism, computer technology, and physics. At the same time, humour and playful experimentation remain important parts of her work. Rather than treating music and performance as fixed categories, she opens them up and asks how they might function differently.

May has presented her work internationally across both visual art and music contexts. She holds an MFA from the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College and is currently pursuing artistic research at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

Her work leaves us with a simple but powerful question:

Is an instrument only a tool for making sound, or does it also carry ideas about the body, society, and the way we are expected to behave?

Moving between sound, sculpture, performance, and technology, Ragnhild May invites us to imagine music—and the bodies that create it—in a wider way.
