RECOCLUB

SHAVONNE WONG

RECOCLUB

SHAVONNE WONG

RECOCLUB

SHAVONNE WONG

RECOCLUB

SHAVONNE WONG

2021년에는 디지털 패션 하우스 **The Fabricant와 함께 Vogue Singapore의 첫 NFT 커버 〈The RenaiXance Rising〉**을 제작했습니다.

Shavonne Wong × Korea

Shavonne Wong × Korea

Singapore-based artist Shavonne Wong explores the relationship between humans and technology through AI, digital humans, and interactive installations.

For Wong, technology is not simply a tool for creating new images. It is a way of examining culture, relationships, social norms, and bias through the way people interact with technology.

Does culture shape the way we interact with AI?

Her project Meet Eva Here (2024–2025) introduced an AI character named Eva, whom visitors could speak with directly.

Running from August 2024 to November 2025 across Singapore, Taipei, Hong Kong, New York, and an online chatbot, the project recorded 2,363 conversations.

Through these conversations, Wong discovered something striking: people brought their own cultural and social expectations into their interactions with AI.

At Taipei Dangdai, Eva was switched to Korean following a request from a Korean visitor. During a conversation with an elderly Korean woman, Eva failed to use the appropriate honorifics.

The visitor did not see this simply as a limitation of the system. She experienced it as rudeness.

Even when we speak to AI, do we expect it to follow the same social rules we have learned from other humans?

AI, Culture, and New Collaborations in Korea

RECOCLUB

Meet Eva Here recorded 2,363 conversations. Was there anything you discovered about people—or about our relationship with AI—that surprised you?

SHAVONNE WONG

What surprised me was how much culture shaped it.

In Singapore, people were polite and transactional, a bit like small talk at a networking event.

In New York, people tried to break her within thirty seconds.

A Japanese visitor told me that AI companions make more sense in Japan because the culture is already comfortable with people playing different roles in different contexts, so an AI playing one fits in easily.

The culture a person grows up in plays a much larger role in how they relate to technology than I would have guessed.

RECOCLUB

In your new installation, a digital mirror renders the room but removes every human from it. What are you exploring through this absence of the human?

SHAVONNE WONG

I'm exploring a feeling I think a lot of people recognise now: being watched constantly and still not feeling seen.

So much of our lives runs through algorithms, and so much of the validation we get comes from being online.

We are recorded and measured more than any generation before us and still feel overlooked.

I wanted to put that feeling in a room, with a body in it.

We understand ourselves through the world we already know, and a mirror is part of that.

Standing in front of one that is recording you and not appearing becomes its own kind of reflection—of how you feel about being looked at.

Someone who wants the spotlight might find it uncomfortable to be left out. Someone more private might feel relief.

Either way, it is uncanny, because we have been shown back to ourselves in every reflective surface our whole lives, and this one declines to.

RECOCLUB

As AI becomes better at understanding and adapting to different cultures, do you think there is also a risk that it could reinforce the biases, hierarchies, or divisions already present within those cultures, rather than helping us move beyond them?

SHAVONNE WONG

Yes, that risk is real.

These systems learn from existing data, so they reproduce whatever is most represented, flattening the nuances and smaller ways of speaking within a culture.

The system has no position of its own; it only reflects what it was trained on.

What interests me more is what follows from trying to fix it.

To use honorifics correctly, a system first has to decide how old you are and where you sit in relation to the other person, so politeness becomes a form of profiling.

And once it speaks a culture fluently, its version starts to function as the correct one, which could hold norms in place longer than they would have lasted on their own.

RECOCLUB

What kind of collaboration would you be interested in exploring with artists in Korea?

SHAVONNE WONG

I'd love to work with Korean collaborators, especially people working in mediums different from mine.

Putting two practices together and seeing what comes out of it is the part I find exciting, and I'd be open to most forms that could take.

I've shown in Korea before, at Kiaf Plus in Seoul in 2021 with The Columns Gallery, and at NFT Korea Festival in Seoul in 2023.

I'd be happy to explore more opportunities there.

Collaboration Across Boundaries

Wong's practice extends beyond galleries and digital screens.

She has collaborated across fashion, beauty, design, music, and digital culture.

In 2021, she worked with digital fashion house The Fabricant on Vogue Singapore's first NFT cover, The RenaiXance Rising, bringing together fashion photography, digital humans, and digital fashion.

In 2022, she participated in Danish audio brand Bang & Olufsen's first NFT collection, DNA, connecting art, music, and digital collectibles.
